Fish Out of Water: Book Two

They must work together to stop a psychopath—and save each other.

Two months ago Jackson Rivers got shot while trying to save Ellery Cramer’s life. Not only is Jackson still suffering from his wounds, the triggerman remains at large—and the body count is mounting.

Jackson and Ellery have been trying to track down Tim Owens since Jackson got out of the hospital, but Owens’s time as a member of the department makes the DA reluctant to turn over any stones. When Owens starts going after people Jackson knows, Ellery’s instincts hit red alert. Hurt in a scuffle with drug-dealing squatters and trying damned hard not to grieve for a childhood spent in hell, Jackson is weak and vulnerable when Owens strikes.

Jackson gets away, but the fallout from the encounter might kill him. It’s not doing Ellery any favors either. When a police detective is abducted—and Jackson and Ellery hold the key to finding her—Ellery finds out exactly what he’s made of. He’s not the corporate shark who believes in winning at all costs; he’s the frightened lover trying to keep the man he cares for from self-destructing in his own valor.

Review:
Still not fully healed from the earlier bust of crooked cops, Jackson and Ellery must chase after the one man that got away with little outside help.  That seems to be easier for Jackson than working his way into admitting he’s in a real relationship with Ellery.
Throughout this story, Jackson battles with his inner demons, convinced he can never give Ellery what he deserves, can never be good enough for him.  And even with everything Jackson does, there was never a point when I wondered if he truly loved Ellery.  His past may have ingrained him a lack of trust in his ability to love but everything he did proved his capacity to love.
Ellery gives all of himself to Jackson, over and over again.  His faith in their feelings, even knowing Jackson could walk out, and his patience (along with the hot and sexy times) keep Jackson unable to pull away.  But Ellery also learns how truly deep his feelings are when Jackson goes missing for hours.
The hunt for the killer, the lack of help from the cops and the utter failure of the city to back them up until it’s almost too late prove a fitting backdrop for Ellery and Jackson’s relationship as it grows and changes.  As they pull in and have their showdown with Owens, they both realize what they have and how easily it can be lost.
I look forward to the next book in the series and seeing how this love grows and changes now that both men are fully committed to each other and their lives as they go after the man that let Owens loose on the civilian population.
