                                         The Ancient by: Kathy Griffith
                                                             reviewed by: Becky

Alasdair Connery has seen a lot in ten thousand years.
He’s the first of his kind; the father of all nightwalkers. Together with his trusted assistant Edgar, he trolls for victims to feed from at his time of blood lust. When he’s invited to a wedding, he meets his perfect choices—a married couple. Bruce and Jules have their own sets of insecurities and secrets. She hides a wealth of insecurities under a shield of bravado, and Bruce? He hides the fact that he can’t stop thinking about the love of his life—his college flame Dr. Jeffrey Bayfield. With Alasdair’s powers of seduction working a little too well, he finds that both of them are growing somewhat dependent on him.
Growing increasingly annoyed at their emotional baggage, some of which he is responsible for, he’s willing to put up with their games for a short time, but something has to happen before his blood fever is over for another fifty years and he has to go back to donors once again, unable to kill humans for their red gift. He rather likes the killing part.
And what is he going to do about Edgar’s own growing feelings for him?

Oh my, where to start! This book was such an enjoyable read for me, and I couldn't put it down! The storyline is inventive and the writing is brilliant! The relationships in this book are so well defined, and I swear if you don't gasp and say "OMG" at least once, you aren't reading the same book I did!

First we meet ancient vampire Alisdair and his assistant Edgar, you can tell right off that poor Edgar has it bad for the sexy Vamp in a kilt (if that don't put a droolworthy pic in your head, I don't know what will ;p), and Alisdair knows it, what will he do about Edgar, and the couple that he chooses to slake his bloodlust?  (and if you don't think those scenes are hot OMG)

Bruce and Jules are at a wedding when they meet a captivating man in a kilt, can he convince them to play, and what will be the end emotional result for this couple, seeing as how Bruce would rather be with the memories of the one who holds his heart, than with his wife it seems!

Jeffery is the one that holds Bruce's heart, and he feels the same, but can they be together and if they are, what does that mean for Jules? I have to say, I fell in love with Jeffery right off the bat, and the way the author navigated this love story and the people involved was brilliant, and didn't get confusing once!

I can't tell you what happens, all I can tell you is to be ready for the unexpected at every turn, this one is truly a masterpiece! Thanks Kathy, for allowing us to experience the magic that is this book!

NOW FOR AN EXCERPT:

Alasdair was tired and drained, even after he had visited Bruce and Julia while they were sleeping, taking a small taste from both of them. He looked at Edgar, finally asleep, curled in his arms.
Every time they made love, it was--better than the last. Edgar had entered him for the first time, and Alasdair had felt so vulnerable, yet so satisfied. He couldn’t explain it. Edgar had taken down his braid, and he was unable to resist putting his hands in it, gathering up that great mass of ebony, silky hair and breathing in its scent. Alasdair had started to pleasure Edgar with his mouth and hands the way Bruce had done to him while Edgar lost himself in his hair. It had made Edgar lose control.
It had emboldened him and he had taken the initiative, not even asking permission before touching him, and Alasdair had actually let him. He shook his head, remembering the way Edgar had lifted him up, clasping him to his chest, then rubbing him with the fragrant oil that was still on his hands from his hair before easing himself in..
..and he remembered freezing in place like a hunted animal in a bright light, then cursing, pleading, begging Edgar not to stop, moving his own body to meet him, desperate--wrapping his legs around Edgar’s waist-- Promising him anything if only he wouldn’t stop.
Edgar had started to move and twitch in his sleep, moaning slightly. He was starting to read him, and that made him nervous. Why couldn’t everything just stay as it was? This time was making him feel emotions, feelings that were--unexpected, not in keeping with his usual demeanor.
They made him feel almost human.
He tightened his arms around Edgar, and his companion quieted. He couldn’t think about it anymore. He laid his cheek on Edgar’s soft head, and closed his eyes--
-- but not before one small tear escaped from the corner of his eye, drifting down to mingle with Edgar’s hair.

The tweeting of the alarm clock on Tuesday morning at 7 AM woke both Bruce and Jules at the same time. Bruce groaned, then slammed his hand down on the button.
“Jesus, already?” He rolled back over and put his arm around her, snuggling her neck and grinning. “You didn’t even get to wake me up with your tongue, honey, what’s up with that?”
“You either, stud,” she said. “Let’s just take a shower together and save water.”
He took her face in his hands. “Why can’t I get enough of you?” he said, whispering to her.

“Once you turn me on, I’m just a perpetual motion machine, honey,” she said, smiling. She didn’t want to tell him that she was pretending he was Alasdair.

UH HUH, TOLD YOU IT WAS HOT! THANKS FOR JOINING ME FOR MY REVIEW OF 'THE ANCIENT', I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO READ IT!
