Blood & Tears
A Flesh novel
The last thing Gabe Vargas wants to do after nearly dying is to leave his young son. But that’s exactly what FBI Agent Drew Bradley is asking him to do. According to Drew, the only way to protect Gabe and find his wife's killer is to fake Gabe’s death.
With an already established adversarial relationship, protecting a hothead like Gabe isn’t exactly a picnic for Drew either. But Drew lets his guard down and a desire for Gabe leaves him confused. Before the crime can be solved, Drew will have to risk more than his life. He’ll also have to risk his heart.
1st Edition published by Dreamspinner Press, July 2011.
*This interview takes place after the events of Blood & Tears but does not contain any spoilers.*
Ethan Stone: Thank you both for agreeing to sit down for an interview with me.
Gabe Vargas: As if we could turn you down. Where would we be without you?
Drew Bradley: We’d be nonexistent. *Laughs*
ES: What did you think of each other when you first met each other in Flesh & Blood?
Gabe: I thought he was a total stuffed shirt. Very arrogant and bossy.
Drew: I pegged Gabe as a smartass right away. I knew he was going to be trouble.
Gabe: I can’t exactly deny that. I had no idea back then that this is where we’d end up today.
ES: This question is for Gabe. What did you think when Drew, in the beginning of Blood & Tears, came to your hospital room and said he needed you to die?
Gabe: For a moment I actually thought he wanted me dead and that he was going to do it himself. Even when he explained the whole story and said he wanted me to fake my death and go into hiding I still wasn’t exactly thrilled with him.
ES: Drew, what did you think Gabe was going to say when you asked him that?
Drew: I honestly didn’t think he was going to go for it. I expected him to tell me to fuck off. Without his agreement I wouldn’t have much choice.
ES: Your relationship at the safe house in Santa Cruz was frosty at first. When did it start to change?
Gabe: When he caught me jacking off. After that he couldn’t stop thinking about me.
Drew: He’s partially right. If other things hadn’t occurred I probably could’ve ignored the sexual feelings I’d developed for Gabe. However, that was the point I basically pulled the stick out of my ass. We could’ve been just friends after that point but then a few other things happened.
ES: Like what?
Gabe: The Scrabble game.
Drew: Yup. That and your date with Bailey.
Gabe: You were so fucking jealous.
Drew: I can’t deny that. The thought of him with someone else drove me crazy. I couldn’t deny I had feelings for him, despite the beliefs I was raised with.
Gabe: He tried, but I refused to give up.
Drew: Thank God.
ES: Drew you come from a big family. How many siblings and can you name them?
Drew: There’s seven siblings. Sorry, eight. Dad’s latest girlfriend just had a baby. Should I go by ages or by which parent? I’ll go by ages. Johnny, Esther, Marissa, Me, Noah, Whit, Solomon, Ruth and Daisy. Fun fact—Whit and Solomon were born a month apart, despite being from separate parents.
ES: I can’t help but notice the amount of Biblical names in that list.
Drew: Yes, Esther, Noah, Solomon and Ruth are siblings on my mother’s side. She’s what some would call religious.
Gabe: Tell ‘em what your real name is.
Drew: Nah, that’s okay. My background—and my full name—aren’t things I like to discuss in public.
ES: Gabe, Cristian Flesh is your best friend. He has a reputation for being an…
Gabe: An asshole? Dickhead? Yes, he’s all that. He’s also a damn good detective and has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. He’s saved my life more than once.
ES: Drew, what do you think of Detective Flesh?
Drew: He’s rude, stubborn and arrogant. And I love him to death, pretty much for the same reasons as Gabe. I’d work with him anytime.

Ethan Stone is an out and proud gay man. Which is fairly new in his life, the out part, not the gay part. He’s been queer his whole life, though he tried to deny it for years with a wonderful woman. The years in denial weren’t all bad, he has two amazing kids out of it. His son is a teenager and his daughter has made him a grandfather, three times over. A way too young grandfather.
Ethan has returned to Oregon after almost a decade in Nevada. He no longer has a day job and is doing his best to make a living at this writing thing. If he can’t make a living, he at least wants to support his Mt. Dew and beef jerky addictions.
Readers can find Ethan online.
