First I'd like to thank Bike Book
Reviews for inviting little ol' me here to talk your ear off about
what I've been reading. I have always loved reading and truth be
told, more often than not I have to have something I'm reading pried
out of my hands to do whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing.
Bedtime and my other half wants us to “just go to sleep, damn it?”
Yup, my Kindle with it's little light more likely than not is making
a wee glow in the darkness as I just have to finish this page, which
somehow becomes the next chapter. Ditto for waiting for the laundry
to finish washing, or just sitting down to have a quick cup of
coffee, or anything else. I even have to stop myself and promise that
I can reward myself with reading time AFTER I make my word count
writing goal for the day. I'll admit I was that kid who had to read
all the signs we passed, the ceral boxes on the table, and even once
when staying the night at a relative's who had nothing else I could
easily just pick up to read, I read a dictionary I found.
My reading moods tend to vary and now
that I get to read my choice of books, I go through phases. Lately
I've been going through a reading routine where I choose a
contemporary romance, then a sci fi, then a contemporary, then a
fantasy, and so on. I admit I like to delve dep into the stacks when
looking so can be found choosing titles from Amazon from authors I've
never heard of before, to back list titles from popular authors, to
re-reading old favourites. Here's a sampling of what I've read over
the past month:
STILL WATERS: F.E. FEELEY JR.:
STILL WATERS DREAMSPINNER LINK
Still Waters by F.E. Feeley- I adore
this man's contemporary spooky suspense stories. I wouldn't call them
horror as there's nothing horrific at all, but plenty of chills and
thrills with just the right seasoning of romance. I love how this and
each of his stories in his Human Wraiths series look at that which
makes us human and the emotions that drive us.
UNDER GLASS: REBECCA COHEN:
Under Glass by Rebecca Cohen- This was
a sci fi story that simply blew me away. You don't have to like
spaceships and aliens to love this. I was reminded of the planet
builders in Hitchhiker's Guide in a way, but this is not a comedy.
Instead, it's a story of self discovery and love. Simply wonderful.
POWER PLAY 1 & 2 BY CAT GRANT AND RACHEL HAIMOWITZ:
The two Power Play novels by Cat Grant
and Rachel Haimowitz- Not for the faint at heart (the scene with the
electro-shock coffin even made me pause so I could clear my head),
this is a love story but between two very stubborn men, one of whom
is a sadist of the BDSM variety. All play is safe, sane, and
consensual and written by two folks in the lifestyle, so if you're
looking for a good hard BDSM novel, this may tickle your fancy.
THE OTHER SIDE OF WINTER: G.B. GORDON:
The Other Side of Winter by G.B.
Gordon- This is the sequel to Santuario. Now, this is a curious mix.
It's sci fi as it's set on a colony world, but it reads as
contemporary as their tech and lifestyle are not that far removed
from our own in many ways. Just enough “other” to give it
distinct flavour. It's realistic and it falls under mystery/suspense
as the two MCs work crime (homicide in the case of Santuario). It
deals with the crime, the two men trying to build on their fledgeling
relationship, and also changes coming to their world as they work to
end a sort of class stratification. Both books get a hearty two
thumbs up from me.
SPELLBOUND: JACOB Z. FLORES:
Spellbound by Jacob Flores- This was
something a little different from this author. It's NA for one thing
and for another, it's fantasy. I fell in love with his contemporary
world filled with warlocks and witches and his spin on vampires.
Lovely coming of age tale that explores self perception, first sexual
romantic relationships, and personal responsibility. He did an ace
job and I am hoping there will be more of these.
DOWN and DIRTY: RHYS FORD:
Down and Dirty by Rhys Ford- I'm going
to just say it here. I have this author on my “Oh My God, They Have
a new book And If I don't Read It, I'm Gonna Die” list.
Klaxon at the Core by Tayla Andor- This
is the sequel to Signal To Noise and it really filled my appetite
for some sci fi with alien baddies, hot guys, romance, and lots and
lots of action (and not just the sexy kind!).
