HELLO FRIENDS! BOY DO I HAVE A GREAT ONE FOR YOU TODAY! I THINK I HAVE HIT THE BOOK JACKPOT, JUST THE RIGHT MIX OF HUMOR (WHICH IS A LOT!) WITH HEARTFELT LOVABLE CHARACTERS HAS 'TELL ME IT'S REAL' BY TJ KLUNE AT THE TOP OF MY RE-READ LIST ALREADY, LET'S TAKE A LOOK!
THIS ONE HAS PAUL'S NAME ALL OVER IT! HERE IS MY REVIEW!
Tell Me It's Real by: TJ Klune
reviewed by: Becky
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Paul Auster doesn't. Paul doesn't believe in much at all. He’s thirty, slightly overweight, and his best features are his acerbic wit and the color commentary he provides as life passes him by. His closest friends are a two-legged dog named Wheels and a quasibipolar drag queen named Helena Handbasket. He works a dead-end job in a soul-sucking cubicle, and if his grandmother's homophobic parrot insults him one more time, Paul is going to wring its stupid neck.
Enter Vince Taylor.
Vince is everything Paul isn’t: sexy, confident, and dumber than the proverbial box of rocks. And for some reason, Vince pursues Paul relentlessly. Vince must be messing with him, because there is no way Vince could want someone like Paul.
But when Paul hits Vince with his car—in a completely unintentional if-he-died-it'd-only-be-manslaughter kind of way—he's forced to see Vince in a whole new light. The only thing stopping Paul from believing in Vince is himself—and that is one obstacle Paul can’t quite seem to overcome. But when tragedy strikes Vince's family, Paul must put aside any notions he has about himself and stand next to the man who thinks he's perfect the way he is.
I love it when a book can both tickle my funny bone and punch me in the gut (in a good way) at the same time, and this one did that epically! This is the first TJ Klune book I have read, but it won't be the last! This book has characters that you can relate to while you are laughing at the off the wall things they come up with!
Paul is stuck, stuck in his job, stuck in his town, and stuck with the thoughts in his own head that he isn't good enough, if he could only see himself like his best friend Sandy and Sandy's over the top, out there alter ego, then it would be smooth sailing! When Paul meets Vince, he doesn't see what Vince sees in him, and after a spinach mishap, and the whole 'car door meets with bike' debacle, he is ready to crawl in a hole and never come out!
Vince wants Paul to see what he sees, that Paul ticks all his boxes, and has a heart of gold (which is evident in the pet he chooses for one) and though Vince has the looks, he is seen as ' a few spuds shy of the tater barrel', as my Grandma would say. This book shows us with humor that everyone has something about them they would change, but when you find the person that is the other half of your heart the flaws don't matter, they don't see them anyway!
Pick this one up people, if you are in favor of snort hiccup laughing (it's a thing, I should know, I did it enough reading this book) while reading a lovely, heartfelt story, then this is the book for you! Thank you TJ, for teaching us a worthwhile lesson with loads and loads of laughter!
