Music in the Writing
And we’ve now arrived at Day 5 of the Falling Awake blog tour! I’m Kage Alan…in case you’re just tuning in. If so, I don’t blame you. We have five more to go and there’s no telling if I’ve been entertaining enough so far. I’m hoping I have. My husband asked me how long my posts have been averaging and I told him about 500 words, then the synopsis and a blurb. “I’d suggest you shorten them to 100 words, but even then that’s too wordy for you.” This is why I refer to him as #evilhalfasian. But, today I’m toooootally talking about one of my favorite parts of writing: the music!

Every book I’ve written has had a soundtrack I’ve put together for it. The reasoning behind this, not that you’ve asked, is because if I ever need to get myself in the mindset to work on a story, having specific songs that play over specific scenes can bring me mentally right where I need to be. I really nailed this process down when I wrote Gaylias: Operation Thunderspell and even though Falling Awake is only a novella, having the music I chose helped keep me going in ways I never anticipated.

For the record, the story of Falling Awake haunted me. It was relentless in demanding to be written, so once I associated music with areas of the story, I had no choice but to sit down and hammer it out whenever I heard those tracks. I have friends who are fellow authors who cannot listen to any music at all when they write. Some can only listen to music without lyrics and some need vocals. I’ve been going back and forth with the last two books.

So, now seems like an ideal opportunity to take you through the tracks I chose for this project. Here’s the breakdown:

Vortex (John Carpenter) – I often think of my stories as movies that play out in my head. I’m merely writing them in book form instead of making the actual film. This particular track would play over the opening credits as the main character of Daniel wakes up with no idea of who he is, where he’s at, or why he has no memory.

Cartoony Universe (Jerome Froese) – It’s not giving anything away to say Daniel is in an airport terminal. This particular track hits on the eeriness of his surroundings and confusion.

Three Bikes in the Sky (Tangerine Dream) – A representation of childhood innocence that plays over a story the character of Eddie tells Daniel. I love this song. I remember thinking it reminded me of the film ET long before I knew the name of the track.

Song For Zula (Phosphorescent) – I heard this song when I was in Austin, Texas earlier this May. I was sitting in a lounge with a friend, Paul Wright, and we were chatting about this story, which was still only in my head. The song came on over the speakers and I immediately used SoundHound on my phone to find out who sang it. The music and mood are perfect for the overall feel of the story.

My Reality at 52 Degrees of Latitude (Jerome Froese) – This song is iconic for Falling Awake. I heard this for the first time and knew EXACTLY where it would be if the story was a film. It puts visuals in your mind and touches an emotional chord. In terms of chapters for those of you who do read the novella, it takes place at the end of the chapter titled The Gate.

The Crystal Ship (Tangerine Dream) – A song that plays just after The Gate. I don’t know what it is about Tangerine Dream’s version of this song, but I’ve loved it since the moment I heard it. There’s magic here and it fits beautifully with where the story ultimately goes.

Oblivion (M83 feat. Susanne Sundfor) – Another iconic moment in the story. We arrive, at long last, at the final paragraph of the story itself. I cry whenever I read it and I cry whenever I hear this song knowing that, to me, it represents the final paragraph of the story. Yes, I’m being vague, but I’m not going to give the end of the novella away!

Falling Awake (Tarja) – Here’s the song that inspired the title. I could hear this playing over the end credits of the film. I love the song, love Tarja’s voice, and the lyrics fit the theme of the story.

Incidentally, before I leave you with the blurb and excerpt, I would like to mention that Martha Davis, the lead singer and songwriter of The Motels, allowed me to use some lyrics in the beginning of Falling Awake she wrote for a song that will hopefully appear on their upcoming album. The track is called As Long As, so be sure to listen for it in the near future.

Until then, I’ll see you again in Day 6’s blog post!

WHAT AN AWESOME POST RIGHT? MUSIC TIES INTO ALMOST EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE, SO I LOVED THIS POST, AND THE BIT ABOUT THE MOTEL'S SONG LYRICS IS GREAT! NOW FOR SOME BOOK INFO:

BLURB:
Imagine waking up in a place you can’t remember, with a face you don’t recognize, and a name that may not be your own printed on a ticket in your back pocket. And of the five people you meet during the next few hours, four of them hold clues to your past, present, and two possible futures.
The outcome of the encounter will determine your soul’s fate, and the only way out of the nightmare may be through falling awake.

HOW ABOUT AN EXCERPT:

“Can I help you, sweetie?”
Daniel spun to his right, desperate to find whoever had spoken, especially if he or she had addressed him. A woman perhaps a decade older than himself stood in the entryway of… Of what? Judging by the booths and chairs behind her, with place settings on the tables, it had to be some kind of restaurant. Odd there was no visible name for the place.
The woman reached up and brushed a mix of gray and black hair away from her eyes, then smiled at him. She wore a simple light yellow short-sleeve top, white pants, and a light blue apron wrapped around her waist—a color scheme mirrored by the light yellow booths and chairs with white cushions, and light blue tables. And while there still wasn’t any indication as to the name of the restaurant anywhere on her uniform, a simple white nametag with black lettering identified her as MARTHA.
“I don’t—” Daniel started, then stopped, his voice failing him. He looked at her, trying to use his eyes to plead and say everything he couldn’t and was afraid to. “Please help me.”

“You know what?” Martha cocked her head to one side. “You look hungry. Why don’t you come in, make yourself comfortable—we have the softest booths, everybody’s always amazed by them—and let me get you something to eat? You won’t believe how much better you’ll feel with a little something in your stomach, and we have an amazing cook. There isn’t anything he can’t make.”
YES I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS ONE, AND I KNOW YOU CAN'T EITHER, HOW ABOUT AN AUTHOR BIO AND SOCIAL LINKS:
AUTHOR BIO:
Non-award winning and utterly non-famous LGBT author Kage Alan lives in a suburb of Detroit, MI with his husband, who answers to “His Majesty,” and their fish and shrimp, who answer to “fish” or “shrimp.” He enjoys attending Sci-Fi and horror conventions, adding to his tiny Blu-Ray library, and fibbing about buying Blu-Rays on New Release Tuesday from the US, UK, Germany, and/or Japan. Kage also lives in fear of His Majesty’s Hong Kong Grandmonster, who God apparently doesn’t want to spend time with.
